Pepino Melon

I came across these in Kipa (Tescos in Turkey) today, I had never seen them before, so had to come home and look them up on the internet.

Pepino melon - also known as tree melon, bush melon or mellowfruit.

It is a native to Peru, but now also grows in California and New Zealand.

The fruit is teardrop in shape and marked with yellow, brown or purple stripes.

They have a taste that is a mixture of cantaloupe and honeydew melon, but are the size of a plum.

When ripe the fruit is a dark yellow in colour and the stripes should be brown or purple.

They should be peeled before eating and then can be eaten on their own or in a fruit platter or go very well with a spinach salad.
