Substitue Foods - Some Useful Cheats

Sometimes you just have to make a substitution if you can not find the foodstuffs that you require, here are a few things I have discovered in my various searches:


Buttermilk - makes one cup, in a cup add a tablespoon of white wine vinegar or lemon juice and then make the cup up with ordinary milk.  Mix well.  Leave to stand for 5 mins before use.

Heavy Cream - Melt 1/3 cup butter in a saucepan, then add it to 3/4 cup milk and stir well.

Evaporated Milk - to 3/4 cup water add 2/3 cup milk powder (coffee mate works well).  Mix well.

Self-Raising Flour - Combine 4 cups of flour to 2 teaspoons salt and 2 tablespoons of baking powder.  Store in an airtight jar.

Cake Flour - In a cup add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and then make up the cup with flour.  Mix well and store in an airtight jar.

Golden Syrup - a dark honey thick honey can be used instead of golden syrup.
